Greenwashing: Eco Options at The Home Depot

While I think it’s great that The Home Depot is saying that the Eco Options Program is their “biggest home improvement project” yet, there is nothing but a small link at the very bottom of their website about this program. Not to mention the advertisement seems to be something they cranked out just because they better hop on to the Earth-friendly eco-wagon.

I think it’s pretty obvious that companies like Home Depo won’t truly go Green. However, they will obviously play up their “Green” factor to attract business from pro-environment consumers.

I was at Home Depot last month and I did notice that they have a wide selection of environment friendly supplies and products in general.

I think it takes a long time for a green effort to take hold in any company. The important thing is that they have it in place and it can only grow from here.

A lot of companies are at least trying to go green. But it is also important to realize that from a business standpoint, there also lies the fact that each company still has a main objective: earn enough money to stay in business. So companies need to maintain lower costs to run their business. A lot of the super going green stuff that companies would love to employ costs extra money. And spending to much extra money is the fast track to going out of business. And with the current economic downturn, this is a bigger issue than ever before. We should praise companies like home depot for doing what they can to go green, but also realize they are limited to what they can do by what they need to do to stay in business.
